Witnesham Wasps 0 Whitton United 10
Whitton United humiliated Witnesham Wasps by equalling their highest scoring game of the season. Four goals from winger Scott Mackay and playmaker Josh Turner, and a goal apiece from Freddy Mcdade and midfielder Romario Smith completed the huge win.
Despite the scoreline, the away side failed to score until near the end of the first half, but they still had the lion’s share of possession and chances. Centre-back Kai Duncan saw his free header go wide from a corner, Josh Turner’s long range strike hit the inside of the post and striker Jordan Carty’s shot cleared the crossbar when faced with a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Alex Tredree.
With 10 minutes of the half to go, midfielder John Goodchild slipped the ball through to Turner and he shot straight at Tredree, but the home goalkeeper parried the ball straight back out to Turner who scored the rebound from 6 yards out. 2 minutes later Turner had got his and his side’s second goal. The ball was fed to him with his back to goal on the edge of the penalty area and he turned and hit the ball first time past the surprised Alex Tredree, who wasn’t expecting the shot so early. However, the shot was close to him and he probably should have dealt with the shot better.
There was also time for United to get a third before half-time. Winger Nathan Ambrose got past two Wasps players and crossed the ball in from the byline. It ran across the face of the goal and got to Freddy McDade, who seemed to take an age getting into a shooting position, and when he was finally allowed some space he took his opportunity, smashing the ball into the roof of the net.
After the interval the onslaught really started, and winger Scott Mackay got them started in the 38th minute with a cracking finish inside the area that he hit across Tredree and into the far corner.
In the 50th minute it was 5-0. Mackay controlled a clearance, let the ball bounce and volleyed the ball past the stranded Tredree.
21 minutes into the second half, midfielder Romario Smith got on the scoresheet for the first time this season with a half volley that he hooked over his head into the corner from 8 yards.
The seventh goal went in via Turner, who steered in Nathan Ambrose’s low cross to complete his hat-trick, and Mackay completed his treble by beating Tredree, who had come too far out of his goal, from long-range; it may have been a miss-hit cross, he won’t care one bit.
With a minute to go in the match, Turner scored the best goal of the game. He picked the ball up in the middle of the opposition half and slalomed and feinted his way past almost the whole Wasps defence before side-footing the ball beyond Tredree. They were now in search of a double-figure scoreline.
They got what they wanted deep into injury time, Mackay hitting a stinging shot beyond Tredree from the edge of the box to get his fourth goal of the match. The final whistle, which came seconds after the tenth goal, was music to Wasps player’s ears.
